Gaylen Haas released "Outside the Box" in August of 2009. The following is the introduction on the first track of the CD.
"Hello, this is Gaylen Haas and thank you for listening to Outside the Box. After being nominated into the world concertina congress hall of fame in 2008, I realized I wanted to do something special, something special and Outside the box. I wanted to do something that would say thank you to all of those individuals that have mentored and motivated me throughout my 25 years of playing the concertina. Without all of your help and encouragement, I would not be where I am today. Therefore, I would like to dedicate this recording to you. Thanks for everything you have done.
I also wanted to do something else outside the box. I wanted to do something to help promote and preserve the Chemnitzer concertina for future generations. Therefore, instead doing a traditional recording with common concertina music, I created a unique recording that will hopefully demonstrate some of the many different styles of music that can be played on this versatile instrument. There were five different concertinas used in this recording.
First, I used a 1919 Pearl Queen in the key of C. Second, I used a 1960's Star Stream line in the key of E flat. Third, I used a 1960's Star Streamline Super with 8 switches also in the key of E flat. Fourth, I used a 1990 Karpek Karrousel in the key of B flat. And finally, I used a 2008 Echo in E flat.
In order to stick with the theme of the recording, I figured I should do something else outside the box. That being, this recording is not for sale. By offering this recording at no cost, I hope to help encourage and motivate others that might not have been exposed to the Chemnitzer concertina.
Three great reasons to call this recording, "Outside the Box."
One last thing before I close. I would like to make a special dedication to our Father above. He is the one that blesses us with all our talents and I am very grateful for that. Therefore, the last song is Oh Come All ye Faithfull and that song is for Him.
If you would like to pay me a visit online you may do so by going to www.gaylenhaas.com. Thanks again for listening. I hope you enjoy it."
